Red Deer RCMP arrest Sylvan Lake man after foot chase in Easthill area, seize drugs, loaded shotgun

Early yesterday morning, Red Deer RCMP arrested and charged a Sylvan Lake man with numerous possession and firearms related charges.

Shortly after midnight on June 18, the suspect’s vehicle was spotted at the Easthill shopping complex after it had fled from police on June 17. When police arrived at the shopping complex, the driver fled on foot. Police pursued on foot and apprehended the man who was found to be in possession of a loaded shotgun, ammunition and illicit drugs (methamphetamine and cocaine) for the purposes of trafficking.

During the foot pursuit, one member of the Red Deer RCMP sustained non-life threatening injuries and was transported to hospital for treatment. The suspect was not injured.

Kyle Harstad, 33, of Sylvan Lake is in custody and faces the following charges:

  • Two charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking
  • Possession of the proceeds of crime
  • Three firearms related charges including unauthorized possession of a firearm
  • Operation of a motor vehicle while prohibited
  • Three counts of breach of release
  • Two counts of resisting arrest
