The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) and Hockey Canada will host the World Junior Championship by using a “bubble” model in Edmonton. This means Red Deer won’t host any live games.
As a partner in World Juniors, however, the City of Red Deer will still have a visible presence in Edmonton, giving viewers around the world a preview of what is to come. In the coming weeks, Red Deer will also look for opportunities to celebrate the tournament’s spirit locally.
“I know this is a significant disappointment for many Red Deerians who were excited to share in the World Junior experience in our community this year,” said Mayor Tara Veer. “While I too am disappointed, the safety and well-being of our citizens, all involved with the tournament, and future guests to our community is priority.”
