What’s that noise? ‘Sound cannons’ used to scare off waterfowl near Red Deer’s wastewater plant

Residents in northeast Red Deer should be aware of bird cannon noises in the months ahead. As waterfowl return to the area looking to nest, the Wastewater Treatment Plant will fire bird cannons in an effort to deter the waterfowl from nesting on the plant site.

Starting this week, there will be two cannons going off at random intervals from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. These hours may need to be extended with longer daylight hours.

The cannons do not pose any danger to the waterfowl. Deterring the waterfowl from nesting at the plant site will protect them from equipment used in ongoing construction work.
