One man is deceased after a confrontation with police outside the Red Deer Hospital. At 9 p.m., RCMP officers were responding to multiple driving complaints when they stopped a vehicle in the parkade at the Red Deer Hospital. A confrontation occurred between the officers and the driver of the vehicle during which officers discharged their service weapons resulting in fatal injury to the man. Police have contained the area and the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is attending the scene to initiate an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of the man.
No RCMP officers sustained injuries during the confrontation.
Access to the Red Deer Hospital Parkade will be restricted while police and ASIRT investigate the incident.
Independent of ASIRT’s investigation, the RCMP’s internal review process has been implemented gather a full account of what took place during this incident. RCMP training, policy, police response, and the member’s duty status will be subject to review.
